Unpacking the latest NDIS news and what it means

NDIS changes explained

You may have seen NDIS reforms in the news lately. The National Disability Insurance Scheme continues to evolve, with changes rolling out through 2026 and beyond, that aim to make planning fairer and clearer for participants.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the headlines and what they might mean for the sector and families:

New planning framework
From mid-2026, the NDIS is introducing a new way of planning support plans. The focus is on understanding support needs in daily life, so budgets are easier to understand and use — with fewer expensive reports required.

🧠 Clarity on supports and how funding works
Legislative reform is underway to clarify what the NDIS funds, and to strengthen how supports are verified, which could help make plans more transparent and consistent.

👧 Thriving Kids initiative
A new program called Thriving Kids is being introduced to provide early support for children with mild to moderate developmental delay or autism outside the NDIS. This change is being phased in later in 2026/2027 and is intended to help more families get timely support while managing pressure on the NDIS.

📍 Why this matters
These reforms are being discussed at the national level and will affect people using disability supports, families and providers across Australia — including right here in Bendigo. Changes like these don’t happen overnight, and community services will need to work together to support participants through the transition.

At Amicus, we aim to help people stay informed and feel confident navigating changes in the disability support landscape.
